DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences

A celebration of the first decade

The Department of Science and Innovation and the National Research Foundation (DSI-NRF) established the Centre of Excellence in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (CoE-MaSS) in April 2014 to strengthen the mathematical sciences in South Africa.

The DSI-NRF CoE-MaSS brings together pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics researchers from 24 Node Institutions around South Africa.

The Centre focuses on advancing cross-disciplinary research topics and developing national capacity in the scarce fields of mathematical and statistical sciences. Our mandate relates to Research, Education and Training, Information Brokerage, Service Rendering, and Networking. The Centre also hosts and funds events throughout the year.

The DSI-NRF CoE-MaSS is turning ten, and together we are celebrating on Wednesday, 20 March!

The Centre will be hosting thematic and collaborative sessions featuring a host of its research leaders, fellows, postgraduate students, and other colleagues, who will be speaking to a variety of topics, from the importance of science communication and community engagement to the future of collaborative Mathematical and Statistical Sciences research in South Africa.

  • Heather Banda

Is a competent and passionate female mathematician pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Mathematical Sciences majoring in Population Dynamics at the University of Pretoria. A Master of Science Degree in Mathematics has helped her confirm prospects of studying Population Dynamics. She studied interaction effects of predator and prey in the Holling-Tanner model with predator-taxis. The programme was designed to test logic, creativity, research and presentation skills, which she found to be gratifying. Currently, she is now improving these skills by doing research which involves developing predictive population models which provide a way to design and evaluate protocols to manage and control specie populations in human cells. The models generate testable predictions which distinguish between different patterns seen in nature when cells divide uncontrollably leading to cancer growths in human bodies, thus, explaining the different mechanisms that might cause these patterns.
